Music is irresistible. It reaches across all ages and languages
and it belongs to all of us, offering a very special way
of connecting with each other. For me, this is the common
thread that joins all of my programs — music drawing
us out and bringing us together. ‘Start with Music!’
is not slick, it's not fancy, but it's authentic, ever changing,
and fun. I hope that you will join us!
If you don’t find an already scheduled class that
suits, please contact me; maybe we can create one. Also
ask about scholarships. Fees for programs do vary, but I’m
always happy to work something out.
- ‘Start with Music!’
Small, participatory music classes for babies, toddlers,
preschoolers, and their adults. Drawing from our rich
folk tradition, we sing, dance, and play. Classes are
organized according to age, and the older groups end with
a snack and a story. Some classes have additional play
time. Enrollment is limited to eight adult/child pairs.
Younger siblings are welcome, but the number is limited.
(See general information on the registration form, under
‘Schedules.’)
- Intergenerational ‘Start with Music!’
Based in senior living facilities, these classes bring
young families and seniors together to make music. The
residents participate by either joining us or simply watching,
according to their preference. The shared bond of music
connects everyone as we sing, dance, play, and have fun
together. Ages: 3 months to 100+. Class locations have
included Hebrew Senior Life (Roslindale), Susan Bailis
Assisted Living Community (Boston), and Goddard House
Assisted Living (Brookline).
- Shalom K'tanim: A Hebrew-English Music Class
Songs, dances, finger-plays, and silliness in two languages.
No prior knowledge of Hebrew is necessary. The musical
activities gradually develop comprehension and vocabulary.
- Singing for Chickens: A Class for Musically
Uncertain Adults
Convinced you can't carry a tune? Are you ready to test
that conviction, or give it up? In this class we close
the door and (very privately) explore what our voices
can do if we’re willing to let them. If you can
talk, you can learn to sing. And anyone who can walk and
breathe can learn to keep a beat. Both single-session
workshops and ongoing classes available.
- Remember Your Toes: Chi Gung for Living with
Less Effort
We spend so much time and energy living our lives that
we sometimes forget to notice the bodies we live in. Chi
gung, an ancient Chinese art for developing the energy
of your body, provides a gentle approach to using our
bodies more freely. We observe and invite, rather than
push and insist. We notice old body patterns and experiment
with new ones. We take the time to breathe both in and
out. This work improves balance and body awareness, increases
energy flow, and offers a way to approach tension and
pain.
- Workshops for preschool teachers:
Varied topics, including basic skill-building as well
as using music to develop literacy and English abilities,
listening and social skills, multicultural awareness,
and more.
- Outreach programs for teen mothers and their
babies: Music can help young mothers bond with
their babies. With songs and play materials, we create
a rich music program that supports English language and
literacy development along with bonding. Past programs
in Chelsea and Roxbury.
- Developmental music program with special needs
children: Based on the DIR-Floortime® model,
these are home-based classes for child and parent.
- Music specialist in area preschools:
Developing and teaching weekly music classes in preschool
classrooms and afterschool programs. Currently in Back
Bay and Jamaica Plain.
