I'm Ruth Schechter, and I've been making music with young
children and their families for the past 25 years. I grew
up in a family where music was part of our daily lives:
we sang in the car, we sang to blow out traffic lights,
we sang to entertain ourselves as we walked to the beach.
Learning to play an instrument was simply part of growing
up. I studied cello and later performed, taught, and recorded
professionally. But once I had kids, making music with them
seemed the most important thing. And when I realized how
many people don’t know or have forgotten how to play
with music, teaching that became my passion and my career.
Music making is too much fun to leave for the professionals!
Using rhythm instruments, everyday play materials, and
our own voices, we make music in lots of ways that you can
easily carry back home. These parent/child classes are playful
and improvisatory, mixing movement and song with personal
attention and social interaction. We all have music inside
us. Here’s a way to help bring it out.
